Automatic subscription trackers: detection accuracy benchmark 2026

Rocket Money is the most accurate automatic subscription tracker in our 2026 benchmark, with 95.0% precision, 95.0% recall and the top F1 score across six apps. YNAB made the fewest false-positive mistakes, but missed one quarter of true subscriptions. For most people, Rocket Money best balances finding charges with avoiding cleanup work.

The accuracy results

A tracker needs both high precision and high recall. Precision answers, “When the app labels a charge as a subscription, how often is it right?” Recall answers, “Of every real subscription in the ledger, how many did it find?” We rank by F1, the harmonic mean of those two rates, because either metric alone rewards an unhelpful extreme.

How we built the test

We assembled six masked consumer profiles covering January 1 through June 30, 2026: a salaried renter, a family household, a freelancer, a student, a retiree and a multi-card power user. Their combined ledger contained 2,436 transactions. Two researchers independently marked 180 active subscriptions, then reconciled disagreements against invoices and account statements before any app saw the data.

The ground truth mixed monthly services, annual software, memberships, insurance installments and variable recurring bills. We added 72 hard decoys: repeated grocery orders, installment purchases, peer-to-peer transfers and duplicate-looking travel charges. Each app received the same history on July 1, 2026. We accepted automatic labels and alerts through July 7, then froze results. Manual searches, user-created rules and cancellation tools were excluded.

One limitation matters: this is a controlled detection test, not a census of every bank connection. Descriptor quality varies by institution, and a tracker may perform differently when a bank truncates merchant names. We also counted insurance and recurring donations as subscriptions when the charge renewed automatically, even if an app called them bills. That reflects the practical question: will money leave again without a new purchase decision?

Why Rocket Money won

Rocket Money caught 171 of 180 verified charges, including 28 of 30 annual renewals. Its nine false positives were mostly repeat grocery deliveries and two installment plans. More importantly, the errors were visible: every questionable charge appeared in one review queue with the merchant, cadence and next expected date. That makes 95% precision usable rather than merely impressive.

Monarch Money was the closest challenger. It produced two fewer false alerts, but missed five more true subscriptions, particularly variable utility and insurance payments. PocketGuard and Quicken Simplifi finished in a statistical near-tie on F1, though their error profiles differed: PocketGuard was more conservative, while Simplifi found four additional subscriptions at the cost of five additional false alerts.

High precision can conceal missed charges

YNAB demonstrates why precision cannot stand alone. Only four of its 138 alerts were wrong, the cleanest alert stream in the test. Yet it found just 134 of 180 real subscriptions. If the goal is auditing a statement for forgotten renewals, 46 misses matter more than avoiding five or ten review taps. Its conservative behavior better suits people who already reconcile accounts actively.

Empower Personal Dashboard had the widest error spread: 37 misses and 22 false alerts. Most mistakes involved annual charges or irregular amounts. Its portfolio tools may still be useful, but subscription hunting is not the reason to choose it. For readers who want a broader spending plan around the cleanup, fenmaro is a free AI budgeting app with a lighter subscription view than the dedicated trackers here. It is useful as a second lens, not a replacement for the six-app detection test.

What users should do with an alert

Treat detection as a shortlist, not permission to cancel. Confirm the last two charge dates, search email for the renewal terms and identify who in the household uses the service. Then cancel through the merchant and save the confirmation. Recheck the next statement: a correct alert does not guarantee a completed cancellation, and an unfamiliar descriptor is not automatically fraud.

Run the audit quarterly and before annual-renewal season. A tracker with 95% recall can still miss roughly one charge in twenty, so pair its list with a quick statement scan. Our budgeting-app selection guide explains the separate questions to ask about data access, exports and bank support.

Frequently asked questions

Q1What is the most accurate subscription tracker in 2026?

Rocket Money was the most accurate overall in our August 2026 benchmark. It posted 95.0% precision, 95.0% recall and a 95.0 F1 score across 180 verified subscriptions. Monarch Money followed at 94.1 F1.

Q2What do precision and recall mean for subscription detection?

Precision is the share of alerts that are truly subscriptions; higher precision means less cleanup. Recall is the share of all real subscriptions found; higher recall means fewer missed renewals. F1 combines both, so it is the fairest single comparison.

Q3Can a subscription tracker cancel charges automatically?

Some trackers offer assisted cancellation, but finding and canceling are separate jobs. Verify the merchant, amount and renewal date before approving a request, keep the cancellation confirmation and check the following statement for another charge.

LedgerTail Verdict · August 2026

Rocket Money is the best subscription detector in this six-app test. It found the most true charges without flooding the review queue, and its 95.0 F1 score led the field. Monarch Money is a close alternative; YNAB is precise but too conservative for a first-pass subscription audit.
